Course Objectives:
At the end of semester, the pupil should be able to:
1. Recognize and write Katakana letters.
2. Write simple sentences using Hiragana and Katakana.
3. Understand the Japanese sentences that the teacher uses.
4. Use numbers in sentences.
5. Exchange greeting with friends and teachers.
6. Tell month, day, days of the week, and weather in Japanese.
7. Carry on simple dialogs in Japanese with teachers and friends.

Textbooks and Materials:
1. The California Association of Japanese Language Schools. (1994).Yasashii Nihongo shokyuu/ Elementary Japanese. Tokyo, Japan: SEIBIDO.
2. Handouts, picture books, picture cards, video tapes, and etc.

Evaluation & Certificate
A final exam is given at the end of each semester. Upon completion of the academic year course, the pupil will be given a CERTIFICATE OF PROMOTION (SHUURYOU SHOUSHO). After the final exam, the teacher will write a formal evaluation (REPORT CARD) of your performance in his or her class and of your overall proficiency: listening, speaking, reading, spelling, communication, penmanship, skills will be evaluated by the letter grade {A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D Needs Attention, and F Failure}. Also your homework, attendance, punctuality, attention, effort, motivation, manners, responsibility, will be evaluated by the letter grade {E Excellent, S Satisfactory, U Unsatisfactory}. At the end of each academic year (in June), you will receive your REPORT CARD. Soko Gakuen will keep your records and will release them only upon your request. The REPORT CARD, together with your results on the final exam given at the end of each semester, will enable us to determine your individual progress and to make recommendations as objectively as possible for your future studies.


Awards & Honors
A KAIKINSHOU (PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD) will be given to the pupil who has had perfect attendance during the academic year, and a SEIKINSHOU (GOOD ATTENDANCE AWARD) to the pupil who has had 1 or 2 absences during the academic year. A DORYOKUSHOU (EFFORT AWARD) may be given to the pupil whose effort throughout the academic year was laudable.

Note to parents:
Every week, the pupils receive assignments. Please assist your child in learning Japanese at home.

Prpcedures:
1. The teacher will follow the calendar below.
2. Between 10:00 – 10:15, the pupils will engage in outdoor activities in the gym. This will help lessen the stress and lower the anxiety of the children.
